This study for a large-scale installation examines the construct of contemporary society’s binary gender system. Judith Butler stressed the performative impact of identity is so deeply ingrained in our embodied experience that we simply cannot surmount the roles that perpetuate oppression, violence and trauma. Part fabric painting, assemblage, video art and installation, Cincture allows for a phantasmic inquiry into a Foucauldian genealogy of gender. It suggests the way to reconciliation is through embracing our position as elements within an infinite web of interconnectivity.
